Leadership Development

Leadership Development

Leadership, what is it and what is the difference between being a manager and being a leader?. Definitions of leadership, there is not a single definition that everyone agrees on. Manfred Kets de Vries, a professor at INSEAD, says that leadership is a set of characteristics, behaviour patterns, personality attributes that makes certain individuals more effective in achieving a set goal or objective.

Another way of describing leadership is to say that, to get the best out of people, individuals, teams, organisations, they need to be led, guided, persuaded, motivated, inspired, to be committed, to do their best, to work together to achieve a common objective. This, rather than the pure management approach of being told, directed, ordered, and treated as subordinates.

True leaders are recognised as being the leader, and their followers accept that they need to be guided by that leader, but they do not feel that they are mere subordinates. A good example is the captain of a sports team – hockey, baseball, netball, cricket, soccer, football, athletics – these are individuals who have an individual role to play, yet find time and ways to motivate and encourage others to do their best, to use their own individual skills, knowledge and experience (scoring goals, defending, winning races, hitting home runs) whilst at the same time working together as a member of the team to achieve team objectives.

There are other ways of defining leadership, managers perform transactions, and leaders bring about transformations.

The transactional manager influences others by appealing to self-interest, primarily through the exchange of rewards and services. The relationship between this type of manager and the follower is seen as a series of rational exchanges that enable each to reach their own goals. Transactional managers supply all the ideas and use rewards as their primary source of power. Followers comply with the leader when it’s in their own interest – the relationship continues as long as the reward is desirable to the follower, and both the manager and the follower see the exchange as a way of achieving their own ends.

The transformational leader inspires followers to not only perform as expected, but to exceed expectations – transformational leaders motivate followers to work for goals that go beyond immediate self-interest, where what is right and good becomes important – these leaders transform the needs, values, preferences and aspirations of followers. They do this so that the interests of the wider group replaces the self-interest of individuals within that group.

It’s interesting that research has shown that the way women leaders describe how they behave, lead, is in line with the transformational style, whereas most male leaders when describing themselves use words and phrases that describe the transactional style. There are exceptions of course, and in some situations the leader can by viewed differently by different groups. Many people in the UK would not describe Margaret Thatcher as transformational in style, but more likely they would use words such as dictatorial, domineering, riding roughshod over opponents, yet others, in her close team for example, describe her as charismatic, motivational, inspirational, kind, supportive.

We can see from this look at Leadership that there are different ways of describing what a leader does, and how, at least in some ways, this is different to how a manager behaves. Individuals recognised as leaders makes it obvious that there are great differences in the way in which certain leaders behave. On the surface there are great differences between the leadership style of Prime Minister Thatcher, and that of the Indian industrialist Rajiv Bajaj. Yet both are widely acknowledged as highly successful leaders. The common factor, it seems, is that all are able to persuade others to follow them, in order to achieve success in their particular field. They all have something that brings diverse people together, to work as a team, to aim for and work hard to achieve a common objective. It is, perhaps, a special talent, or characteristic, or personality trait, or set of circumstances that they find themselves in, or perhaps a combination of all of these. Perhaps leaders are born with this ability, perhaps it is something that can be, or has to be, learned.

How To Use Diamond Tool To Cut Steel In Micro Machining

How To Use Diamond Tool To Cut Steel In Micro Machining

The diamond tool is commonly used in micro-machining as it can withstand the micro hardening of the workpiece surface during micro-machining. This micro-hardening creates enough resistance to break the tool bit easily in micro milling, but not a diamond tool. Micro-machining using diamond tool could be performed at high speeds and generally fine speeds to produce good surface finish such as mirror surfaces and high dimensional accuracy in non-ferrous alloys and abrasive non-metallic materials.

However, if a diamond tool were to be used to cut steel, one of the most common engineering materials used in industries, the diamond tool will face severe tool wear. While diamond only softens at 1350 degree Celsius and melts at 3027 degree Celsius, and is also the hardest material in the world, it has a weakness. Diamond succumbs to graphitization, which means that it will change its crystal structure to graphite crystal structure at 200 degree Celsius in the presence of a catalyst metal such as carbon steel and alloys with titanium, nickel and cobalt.

There have been various attempts to improve the tool life of the diamond tool while cutting steel so as to improve the efficiency and profitability of this operation. Such processes include micro-cutting the steel workpiece in a carbon-rich gas chamber as well as a cryongenically cooled chamber. However, these methods require costly equipment modification and restrict direct supervision of the micro-cutting process.

The latest breakthrough came when the diamond tool was subject to ultrasonic vibration during micro-cutting. It has been shown that a diamond tool subject to ultrasonic vibration can cut the steel well enough to produce a mirror surface finish with acceptable tool life. The ultrasonic vibration at the diamond tool tip allows the tool face to cool down considerably during the cutting process and delays the chemical reaction between the diamond tool and the steel workpiece. As a result, the diamond tool life is increased by a few hundred times.

For example, a single crystal diamond tool with feedrate 5 micron/revolution, cutting speed zero to 5m/min and depth of cut 10 micron was attached to a ultrasonic vibration generator so that the diamond tool tip vibrated about 4 microns while it was used to cut stainless steel. The mirror surface finish of the cut steel surface was measured at 8 nm Ra!

With more and more machining companies moving into the niche micro machining field, such ultrasonic vibration assisted cutting can only help the progressive company to achieve process leadership and innovative differentiation.

Cincinnati Schools Creates Programs to Improve Teaching and Learning

Cincinnati Schools Creates Programs to Improve Teaching and Learning

Teacher Advancement Program

Three Cincinnati Schools have volunteered to take part in a new program next school year that is aimed to improve the school’s instructional strategies and increase professional development. The aim of the program is to illustrate the connection between effective teaching and the student’s academic performance. The Cincinnati Schools involved in the pilot program are John P. Parker School in Madisonville, South Avondale School in Avondale and Whittier School in Price Hill. These schools cover kindergarten to eighth grade. These schools were chosen over other Cincinnati Schools due to each school’s rankings within the federal No Child Left Behind Act and their potential for growth. The Teacher Advancement Program is a research based school reform program that is designed to retain the best teachers in the profession in the schools. The Teacher Advancement Program was created in 1999 by the Milken Family Foundation. A major goal of the Teacher Advancement Program is to reverse the tendency of gifted young teachers leaving schools for other work by turning teaching into a worthwhile career choice. Teacher Advancement Program is endorsed by the Ohio Department of Education as a new restructuring program and by Cincinnati Schools’ teachers’ union, the Cincinnati Federation of Teachers. Teacher Advancement Program focuses on four areas of teacher development and student achievement: • Ongoing, applied professional growth — Teachers are given time each week during the school day to work with teachers in the same grades or subjects to match instructional practices to student needs. • Multiple career paths — Each school offers mentors and master lead teachers to meet regularly with teachers to plan and reflect on instruction. • Instructionally focused accountability — Teachers will focus on student data to improve instruction and on feedback from observations by the mentors, master teachers and principals. • Incentive pay — Following negotiations with the CFT and CPS, incentive pay for teachers could be added for student achievement, professional growth and/or instructional growth.

Cincinnati Schools Set Five Year Plan

Cincinnati Schools have initiated a five year progress plan beginning this coming school year. The plan known as Building Futures: Every Student… Every School… Every Day has been recently approved by the Cincinnati Schools Education Broad. The plan aims to be students centered and sets high performance objectives. The plan wants to foster stronger links to families and community members with Cincinnati Schools and increase professional development among the teachers, staff and administrators. The plan also sets clear accountability measures. The plan was developed based on input from individuals and groups representing parents, community members, school staff, students, elected officials, business leaders, civil-rights organizations, faith-based associations, and others. This plan is divided into ten strategic areas. The plan sets improvement goals for all ten of these areas: 1. All pre K-12 students meet or exceed high academic standards. 2. All students graduate and are prepared for postsecondary education, successful careers and productive citizenship. 3. Schools have autonomy and effective governance, and are held accountable for results. 4. Schools are safe, supportive and family friendly. 5. The district supports schools and is accountable for results. 6. The district employs a highly qualified, diverse workforce that engages in continuous improvement through ongoing, high-quality professional development. 7. The district implements a systemic leadership development program. 8. State-of-the-art school facilities are designed to support student learning in a standards-based environment and are constructed meeting diversity-participation goals. 9. The district and schools are fiscally responsible and allocate resources equitably to support student learning. 10. Community partnerships strengthen the connection between schools and neighborhoods while supporting student learning and family engagement.

Lenders And Investors 5 Ways Of Getting Personal

Lenders And Investors 5 Ways Of Getting Personal

Everybody says it. “Get a personal introduction and you’ll fare much better.”

So, what? I walk up to this guy when he’s at lunch and introduce myself, noting that I’d like $850,000 for my new business?” No, I don’t think so.

There are, actually, much better ways of getting that personal introduction, such as:

1.Via Rejections

Yes, rejections do have a rosy side. Every time a lender or investor rejects your business plan, call and ask who they recommend as a good prospect.

Then, contact the person/company that is recommended, noting, “Jan Snicker at Big Oldie Bank suggested I contact you.”

Voila! There’s your personal introduction.

2.Via Research

Use your research to identify something common between you and the lender/investor. Perhaps your neighbor went to the same college he did. Perhaps your kids are both into ice hockey.

Use that commonality to get your personal approach.

For example, you discover that he is a Scout leader, just as you were. So start out, “Being a Scout leader taught me the importance of teaching leadership skills to my team.”

Before you know it, you and he are good buddies.

3.Via a Common Contact

Somewhere within seven degrees of separation there are people common to both of you, either in your professional lives, or your personal circles.

This may take some legwork. You need to hook up with the person who knows the person who knows him. But it’s well worth it. The gold mine of information you discover along the way, as well as that ever valuable personal introduction, make every moment worth while.

Is this imposing on people? Not at all. People like to be asked. They like feeling important. So give them both.

Don’t be surprised if a journey like this turns up other investors/lenders that you hadn’t even thought of.

4.Via a Chance Encounter

You suspect that Mr. Gingle will be at the investor forum next week? Well, what the dickens is stopping you? Line up that intro now.

If you can manage to be at his table at lunch, you’ve hit a home run. But any “chance” encounter will do just fine. All you need is a few minutes to give your investor introduction pitch.

Your goal is to have him say that it’s OK for you to send a business plan to his attention. That, realistically, is all the time he will have at a brief encounter like this.

5.Via the Back Door

Your lender/investor has clients. Some have been very successful and earned him a lot of money.

If you cannot get to your person, try getting to that particular client. Industry conferences are always a good bet. Local business conferences often work well too.

I know one industrious entrepreneur who moved to Menlo Park, California, and hung out in the local pubs known to be frequented by venture capitalists. While that was a bit radical, the approach is right on target.

I cannot over-emphasize the importance of conducting research on your potential investment partner. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the bank around the corner or the venture capital firm on the other side of the country. Find out everything you can – names, biographies, hobbies, speeches, education, career path.

Then, when you do get that personal introduction (and it’s invariably at a time when you least expect it!), you will have the “info glue” to make the introduction stick.

Good luck on your adventure!

Male Role Models Who You Need And Why You Need Them

Male Role Models Who You Need And Why You Need Them

Whenever youre searching for advice and wisdom and your dad just wont do, you have to look for role models elsewhere. You need to define yourself as a man, and you need examples to lead the way. Being a real man means that there are certain traits you have to adopt and most of these are already latent in your personality. All you have to do is find the perfect role models to mold yourself after. Here are the best men, fictional and real, to help you take the steps you need in order to become A Real Man.

1) James Bond

Bond: That looks like a woman’s gun. Largo: Do you know a lot about guns, Mr. Bond? Bond: No, but I know a lot about women.

Have you ever seen this guy in a crisis? Does he run away and scream at the first sign of trouble? Never. He maintains a state of relaxed confidence. The way you react during a crisis definitely shows your character, and if you have any sense at all, youll prefer having James Bonds character instead of Richard Simmons. Of course, you may give yourself only five seconds of panic at the first sign of trouble. But after that, you have to take a calm and confident attitude or else your emotions will get the best of you, and youll end up making things worse.

When it comes to approaching women, James Bond doesnt stutter or say Uhm between silences. He knows exactly where he wants to take the conversation. If the lady shows disinterest in him (a rare case), he shrugs it off. He doesnt wallow or linger around like a loser. He walks away from it elegantly. It takes practice to follow his example when it comes to rejections, but its an attitude youll definitely have to develop if you want to allow yourself to take chances.

2) James Dean

Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today.

James Deans persona is the embodiment of the saying Live fast, die young. While it is not recommended that you die young, living fast sounds like good advice. Do something wrong once in a while. It doesnt have to be illegal, it just has to be wrong in one way or another. Smash your fist into a wall. Take up boxing or wrestling and join an amateur competition. Find a way for you to get that natural, exhilarating high. While women say the like stability, most of them are attracted to the wildish nature in men. This wildish nature is the part of a man that seek adventure, unpredictability, and excitement. Get in touch with that aspect of yourself once in a while. Not only will this make you open to new experiences, but it will also make you feel as if youve lived life to the fullest.

3) Donald Trump

“Think big, or go home.”

His hairstyle notwithstanding, Donald Trump is a man that all men with ambition should look up to. He takes his dreams seriously, and he doesnt tolerate laziness and mediocrity. He was also married to very beautiful women probably because they couldnt resist how strong and driven he is. It doesnt mean that you should make money and business a priority, the Donald Trump way is finding something that youre passionate about and pursuing it. It means finding a balance between listening to other peoples advice and following your own instincts. Having a sense of accomplishment is something that all men should aspire to, mostly because it makes you feel as if youre contributing something to the world. And lets face it other people, especially women, are drawn to men who have attained something worthwhile.

4) Those Guys from Queer Eye for a Straight Guy

It just goes to show: bad taste does not discriminate. Jai Rodriguez

No, you do not have to sleep with other guys. While it may seem odd that five gay guys are in a real mans role models list, wouldnt it be great if these five guys didnt have to work on straight men anymore? The concept is simple, really men should pay more attention to proper food, grooming, fashion, interior design, and culture. Get rid of the stereotype that heterosexual men are clueless about fashion. Leave the dirty rooms and baggy gangsta clothes to highschool boys. You dont have to nit-pick on every speck of dust in your home or every gram of fat in your food, you just need to pay a little more attention on how you present yourself as well as what you put inside your body. If youre finding the whole gay thing a little awkward, get a subscription of a mens health or mens fashion magazine to keep yourself updated.

5) Vito Corleone

Do you spend time with your family? Good. Because a man who doesn’t spend time with his family can never be a real man.

Women like an alpha male, and one of the important characteristics of an alpha male is that he takes care of his family. Being protective and caring of your family and friends shows your deep interest in people, as well as your dependability. Give your younger siblings advice, give your mom the nice coat shes always wanted, and dont be afraid to help out random strangers. You have to be a rock that people can lean on during times of crisis. The test of a true man is to show strength during hardship and this strength is based on reason, not anger and brute force. All real men should display leadership qualities, but they shouldnt confuse this with bossiness. True leaders know when to take charge and when to step aside make sure that you let your woman take control from time to time. The plus side of being a good family man is that when you see how strong youve become for other people, youll soon learn to trust your own strength and instincts.

How to Strike Gold with Women 15 Grave Behaviors That Women Abhor

How to Strike Gold with Women 15 Grave Behaviors That Women Abhor

You must realize at the very outset that there are some actions which irritate and put off a woman. As we proceed further on, we will give you many options to choose from, with regard to such aspects of men’s behavior which turn off women and ways to avoid display of such manners.

1. Clingy/Needy Behavior When you display a clinging, “I –need-you-all-the-time” attitude. These arise mainly out of a constant fear of loss or a feeling of insecurity in men. If you give out a feeling to the woman that without her you will perish, since you feel so very insecure, it is surely going to put her off. Like calling her a million times, feeling envious of her friends, resenting all or anything that she does with anyone else other than you, are activities which completely thwart a woman’s sense of freedom and she will vanish at the first available opportunity.

2. Pushy When you display over-aggressive or bullish behavior. Especially when it comes to a sexual relationship, some men bulldoze their way and force women to indulge in such an act. And of course, later wonder why they never derived any enjoyment out of it.

3. Bragging/Boasting Women truly hate this. She might be temporarily impressed with your bravado, but with your continuous narration of “I” stories – she will surely get bored. And most of all, don’t you think you should hold her interest by giving out details part by part and not the whole thing in one go.

4. Angry or Violent Temper Train your mind to learn to control your moods and temper adequately. A controlled behavior is the sign or a refined person. And a woman can not have faith in someone who loses his shirt or blows up frequently. She will be in awe of you but you can not win her confidence.

5. Insensitivity This does not mean saying rude words to her; it means not being able to express to her that you are being light-hearted and in a fun-loving mood.

6. Boring Men appear boring mainly if he is bashful or diffident and he is incapable of displaying his true character, his persona.

7. Passive and Indecisive Women feel very secure when her man is able to take prompt decisions, stick to his decisions and displays other leadership qualities. You then give out the signal of being in control of situations, being able to provide for her.

8. Be a Good Listener Stop looking at her mammary glands for a change and listen. You then make her feel important.

9. Stop being Stingy and Mean This does not mean that you flood her with expensive gifts all the time, but if on a date and in a café…be prepared to foot the bill. Chivalry still pays.

10. Don’t be Boorish Some men think if they act rough and bristly with women, they will give some sort of a macho image, or gather a kind of sympathy, so that the next step she will take is restore him mentally and co-operate with his attitude. Think again.

11. When you Try Too Hard When you pose to be the eager-beaver. Desperate to please. She starts to get wary and skeptical.

12. Sex on Top of Mind It is perfectly alright to have sex in your mind. It is natural and women have that thought too. But if you approach her with this as the sole agenda of meeting her, she will run for life, and you will not even get a second chance.

13. Learn to Relax Women find it a pleasure to be with a relaxed, calm and behaviorally controlled man. Practice the art of self-discipline

14. Stop Acting Defensive If for some reason, you find the woman in a foul mood, stop acting defensive and giving her your story. Be sympathetic and understanding. Master your own mind to keep emotions from flying off.

15. Develop a Positive Frame of Mind Negative attitudes are a real no-no for most women.

A Complete Nursing Career Overview

A Complete Nursing Career Overview

With almost 2.6M registered nurses (RN) in the United States, nursing is now the largest health care profession in the country. If you think that hospitals are the only place a nurse could be found, you are certainly misled. Public health agencies, communities, ambulatory care centers and other places where health care services are rendered also commonly have nurses employed.

1. The Nursing Practice

Nursing covers a wide area of practice. It includes

- Childcare – Elderly care – Services for pregnant women – Services for newborn infants – Specialty area – injury nursing – Specialty area – cancer nursing – Specialty area – forensic nursing

2. Choose Your Nursing Program

The first step to be a nurse is to graduate from a nursing program. This would enable you to take a state licensure examination. In the US, more than 1500 nursing programs are offered. Three of these programs prepare you in assuming different tasks once you graduate.

A. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) This is a four-year curriculum offered in colleges and universities. A graduate of this course has the advantage of learning health care settings that includes leadership and management. A degree in BSN is preferred and often required in many fields of nursing.

B. Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) This is a 2 to 3 year program offered in community college as well as in junior collages. This program prepares the student in handling direct patient care.

C. Hospital Diploma This is a 2 to 3 year program that is based in hospitals.

3. Nursing Positions

Now that you’ve covered the basics, let’s take a closer look on some of the nursing positions you can occupy. These positions are based on your experience and education.

A. Entry-level nursing position This is the Staff Nurse Position. The nurse takes on making judgments based on scientific knowledge. You have to rely on procedures and standardized care plans.

B. Certified Mid-wife This is a specialty nurse position where the nurse aids childbearing women. It starts during the preconception stage and goes through the prenatal, labor and delivery. Postpartum period care is also included in her duties. The nurse also provides family planning counseling as well as gynecological care for women.

C. Case Manager Over time, a nurse can become a nurse case manager. In this position, the nurse will be involved in the process of organizing as well as coordinating the resources and services of an entire group of nurses, such as an entire hospital.

D. Nurse Educator This is also a position a nurse could get involved with. Educating people about proper health care needs and procedures would be the basic tasks for this position. A Nurse Practitioner on the other hand conducts physical exams on patients, conducts diagnoses and provides treatments. A nurse practitioner could also write prescriptions and could also manage patients with chronic conditions such as diabetics and those with hypertension.

E. Nurse Anesthetist A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist assists during operations. They give anesthesia to the patients before and after the operation.

There are also various specialty nursing programs that would help you specialize in a specific area. Radiology Nursing, Rehabilitation Nursing, AIDS Care Nursing, and Forensic Nursing are few of these specialty areas. Radiology Nurses are concerned with patients that undergo diagnosis in radiology imaging environments. It also includes Ultrasonography, magnetic resonance and radiation oncology. Rehabilitation Nurses or Psychiatric Nurses takes on providing physical and emotional support both to the patient and their families. They deal with patients having mental incapacities. An AIDS Care Nurse manages the physical, psychological, spiritual and social needs of a patient suffering with AIDS. A Forensic Nurse works in a different environment with other nurses. They work with the law enforcement officials to help in the investigation of crimes like sexual assault and accidental death. They also help in the treatment of the victims of these crimes.

A Vision For A Professional Fighting League Local Fighters Team Owners And Fans

A Vision For A Professional Fighting League Local Fighters Team Owners And Fans

There is, and always has been, a problem in the world of professional fighting: Unlike almost any other sport, a single entity controls the players. In boxing, a single notorious promoter almost ruined the sport (and arguably did) with the way he managed and controlled fighters and matches. Now, in the booming sport of mixed martial arts (MMA), the leading brands control the match ups and, in the case of the International Fight League, own the teams.

In contrast, the top sports franchises of our day – the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL – all succeeded based on local teams, local owners, and local fans working together to create something larger and greater than a single owner ever could. Team owners gave up a little bit in order to create something truly special. It is time for a similar vision to come to fruition in the fighting world.

Bonecrunch Fighting is a new league-based fighting organization based on exactly this concept. In this league, local owners build teams with as many local fighters as possible, in order to gain the support of local fans. The league is structured like a franchise, and seeks entrepreneurs with financial staying power to own and build successful teams.

Results so far include:

- An inaugural event that sold out a 3600 seat arena in Sarasota Florida.

- Top sponsors including the US Marines and Budweiser.

- Creation of the required legal documents to sell a franchise to interested and qualified team owners.

- Assembly of a top leadership team with management and fighting industry expertise.

- Development of template marketing materials, project management tools, and contracts to successfully run events.

- Agreements with five top MMA trainers and school owners (with four more in the works) who have put fighters into leading organizations. These trainers have a cadre of excellent local fighters ready to take on other teams – and ready to serve as “turn key” teams when a team owner purchase their geography.

- Interest from a number of entrepreneurs to purchase the rights to a team.

The advantages of this model become clearest when a network of at least five or six teams is operating. At that point, the league can begin to attract regional and national sponsors, and television/pay per view interest – the type of recognition that no local promoter can generate independently. The brand equity of the league will grow as fans support their local teams towards the play-offs and inter-league title/all-star events. In addition to putting on league events in their geographies, team owners are free to experiment with different concepts, including amateur and professional fights, tournaments, and different types of fighting formats (i.e., grappling, wrestling, stand up combat, boxing, and other formats that become popular).

Because the league is looking to achieve critical mass, initial franchises are priced at only $20,000 (compared to most other franchises, sports or otherwise, and the discount is significant). This advantageous pricing gives early adopters the chance to realize a significant capital gain, because later owners will pay a premium. At the same time, Bonecrunch carefully screens potential owners to make sure that they have the long-term vision and required capital for their team, and the league, to succeed.

Contrast this concept with its nearest rival, the International Fight League (IFL). The IFL has raised over $15 million dollars to create league-owned teams and attract television deals. Its stock price has had a roller coaster ride and currently trades at under $1 after reaching highs of $17 and the league struggles to contain costs and achieve profitability. Meanwhile, Bonecrunch is a grassroots effort that requires much less capital from a group of committed team owners, trainers, and fighters in order to succeed. By using the franchise model, Bonecrunch can grow organically and achieve critical mass with a comparably tiny investment.

Time will tell if this model can succeed in the highly competitive, fickle, and regulated world of fighting. However, it is time to bring this model to what has been a centrally controlled sport and find out what kind of difference it can make – to fans, fighters, and the entrepreneurs who purchase a franchise and own a professional sports team.

Four Questions About Leadership

Four Questions About Leadership

I hear four questions asked about leadership often. This article gives a short answer to each of these important questions.

Why Does Leadership Matter?

Parents universally hope that their children develop leadership qualities. They know that leaders are people who are effective in what they do, are respected by others, and typically rewarded for those skills in a variety of ways. It is in these formative years that, through our parents, we first see leadership as desirable and important.

As young people we look up to people around us that motivate and listen to us; people that seem like “real-life” heroes. We consider these people leaders.

As we grow we begin to relate leaders to their jobs – ministers, teachers, police officers. And later Mayors, Presidents, and CEO’s . . .

As adults all of these thoughts and experiences define why we think leaders have desirable traits and play roles we admire (and why we desire these things for our children).

All of these experiences and thoughts help us define why leadership matters – it matters because leaders make a difference and can shape the future. It matters because leaders are valued and valuable. In everyone’s mind leadership, especially when it is good, matters.

What is a Leader?

A leader is a person who sees something that needs to be done, knows that they can help make it happen, and gets started.

A leader sees opportunity and captures it.

A leader sees a future that can be different and better, and helps others see that picture too.

A leader knows they can’t do it alone.

A leader is a coach.

A leader is an encourager.

A leader views change as their ally.

A leader is willing to take risks today for something better tomorrow.

A leader is a learner.

A leader is a communicator.

A leader is a coordinator.

A leader is a listener.

A leader takes a long view – letting their vision keep their daily steps on track.

A leader is passionate.

A leader motivates and inspires.

A leader values results.

A leader cares about more than results though; she cares about those who are following her lead.

A leader makes a difference in the lives of others.

A leader is all of these things and much more.

Are People Born Leaders?

Sure they are – I mean everyone is born, right?

You might say that riddle-like answer misses the point. You say the real answer is that some people are truly born to lead.

And I would reply that your common statement implies that others aren’t born to be leaders.

So let’s examine that difference of opinion…

When people describe someone as a “born leader” they typically mean that the person is motivating, a good communicator and charismatic. And it is true; some people are blessed at birth with more natural ability in these ways.

But leaders can be great with different innate characteristics as well.

And there is no single small skill set that defines the perfect leader or guarantees success.

Everyone is born with a unique set of natural abilities. And all of us can develop skills and styles to complement those natural abilities.

Who is a Leader?

This question on the surface is the easiest question I’ve asked so far. After all, I’ve already given some examples.

People in certain roles are leaders, whether they’ve studied for the role, like a doctor, lawyer, teacher or minister… got elected to the role, like a county councilman, mayor, Senator or President… or worked up the through the organization like a supervisor, manager, Vice President or CEO.

You can ask most anyone the question “Who is a leader?” and those are the kinds of answers they will give you.

They are right, of course. But they are only partially right.

Leaders aren’t leaders because of a job title.

Leaders are leaders because they lead.

Which takes me back to my previous question – “Are people born leaders?” Yes they are. But it isn’t just a few that have been hand picked by our Creator or random genetics.

We have all been picked – genetics has selected us all.

We were all born to lead, in our own way.

We may not be the Chairman of the Board. We may not be the person on the stage.

We may not lead with oratory or flair.

We may lead by compassion.

We may lead by example.

We all can lead.

We all have the ability to be remarkable leaders.

Leadership isn’t about position.

Leadership isn’t about power.

Leadership is about potential – your potential.

You are a leader. Claim and believe this to be true, for it is. Stake your claim and make a difference in the world around you.

Your opportunities for leadership are endless. The rewards are boundless.

My answers to four questions lead to a question for you…

Where will you lead?

Good Self Bad Self

Good Self Bad Self

Do you walk your talk? Most of us like to think that we mean what we say and say what we mean.

Then why do we keep saying we will quit doing this, or start doing that, and we find we keep on doing the same old things? Most New Year’s resolutions end up abandoned shortly after they were made.

We are not liars. We are sincere at the time. But soon or later, we find ourselves faced with conflicting emotions, convictions and our real actions.

Most of the time we kid ourselves with a system of delusions and denial. We say we are one kind of person, while doing things that are contrary to our desired image.

Psychologists call it “cognitive dissonance,” a state of discomfort when we say one thing but do another. We will go to any lengths to avoid that feeling, hence we construct an elaborate system of delusions, denial, and some behaviors we don’t even notice.

To face the fact that we aren’t acting like the person we believe we should be is painful and unpleasant. We don’t have time for that. Negative emotions get in the way of our being productive and focusing on the tasks and goals at hand.

So we live with incongruencies and denial, and our battling inner selves seem to be just part of who we are. We find a way to excuse ourselves. We are forgiving of our inconsistencies. We’re only human, after all.

The problem is that all that conflicting undercurrent saps our energy and spirit. The price we pay by not facing these paradoxes is fatigue, irritability, and lack of energy. It takes a tremendous amount of energy to maintain the different sides of our personality in some sort of harmony.

Most people don’t recognize the extent of their inner complexity. We run into trouble when we set goals that do not take into account the differing sides of our personalities.

We have competing selves and competing commitments. On the one hand, we may truly be health conscious and want to maintain a set of healthy standards. On the other hand, we are also committed to having fun and enjoying life. These two values may compete for our attention, and usually the goal of immediate pleasure will win out over delayed satisfaction.

We may value family life and work hard to give our family things that provide pleasure and comfort. But what happens when our commitment to work and financial success interferes with spending time with children and spouses?

What about our sense of orderliness? What happens when the focus on just getting things done overrides getting the most important things done?

Human beings are complex animals, with competing drives and a multitude of values. It is not easy to know oneself well. How do you gain self-awareness so that appropriate goals and priorities can be set?

Try to identify 3-5 values and priorities that motivate you strongly. Then identify any competing values that also must be satisfied. Many times something we value has an opposite that we also value. These competing values must be reconciled in your mind.

Once you identify your strongest desires, and the competing drives that vie for your attention and focus, revise your goals and priorities to honor both sides of your personality. Try setting realistic goals that will allow for both sides of your competing values.

Both sides of you will love you for it!
